What The Daughter Does, The Mother Did!

What The Daughter Does, The Mother Did!

Everyone keeps asking me, when are you having another baby. Well, that’s a topic for another post. Don’t get me wrong, I am not opposed to having another child, but if it were to happen I’d want another son. I love little boys. My husband has begged me to stop saying that out loud because it sounds creepy, like Chris Hansen may bust into our living room with cameras rolling. What I am trying to say is that I’ve always felt I would be a better mother to a boy. Sometimes I think it is because of my close relationship with my younger brother, but most of the times it is because I remember how I...

Women Without Children Are Selfish?!

(standing in line at Bank of America with S Dot…an older lady stands behind us) Her: Your son is so handsome! Me: Aww, thank you very much. I appreciate that. Her: You just don’t see enough women like you having children. Me: <hmm, I’m not sure I like where this is going.> Her: Women get educated and decide they don’t want to have babies. It’s just selfish! Me: <cautiously> I can’t say that I agree. It’s not selfish; it’s their choice. Teller: I can help the next person in line. Me: <Thank God!> I always told myself I wasn’t going to have children. My plan was to move...

The Rose That Grew From Concrete

The Rose That Grew From Concrete

I’d just left the office to grab some lunch from a one of the many food trucks downtown. As I was walking up the street I heard a woman shouting, “If you don’t move your f@#king ass. Sh#t! Let me have to tell your dumb ass again and I’m going to beat ya little ass!” At that moment I turned to see a “young lady” (please note the quotation marks) in her late twenties pulling the arm of a roughly 5-year-old girl–who obviously was walking too slowly for her mother. Honestly, I was praying that at any second a lightning bolt would sear the afternoon sky and the woman would implode...

I Have To Stop Comparing Myself…

I Have To Stop Comparing Myself…

I watched Beyoncé’s beautiful documentary this weekend with my husband. Of course, I could have listened to her talk about motherhood for the full 90 minutes but I’m a bit of a nut that way. As the end credits scrolled, I turned off the TV, brushed my teeth and got into bed. As I was laying in the dark, I felt a pit in the center of my stomach and I was flooded by thoughts racing through my mind. Within seconds I was under a slight weight of sadness. My stomach was in knots. “What the hell is my problem?” <yes, this is how I speak to myself>. And, then it hit me. I was sick with...

Life Is All One FREAKING Test!

Posted by in Diary | 0 comments

No matter how much you plan the unexpected will happen. You lay your clothes out for work the night before just to spend a hour the next morning trying to find your bra. Before leaving the house, you save an address in your phone’s GPS just to spend the next hour lost, in the car, trying to locate a signal; you pick out the perfect outfit for your son, rush him to his first preschool open-house and as soon as you park the car he throws-up all over his clothes and car seat. It never freaking fails! It’s like one of my favorite Alanis Morissette songs, “Ironic”.  “…An old man turned...

Mutual Connection

Mutual Connection

Casey and I worked together briefly before I left for maternity leave. We were both cordial, but I didn’t overly extend myself because I like to keep my personal life separate from work (basically, I don’t want everyone up in my business). When I returned three-months later, she shared that she was expecting her first child and I immediately felt a connection–the baby connection! I have crossed paths with many people who initially seem the complete opposite of myself. But, as soon as you get a person talking about their children the barriers begin to crumble.  Now that I...

Real Fathers Don’t Need An Applause

Real Fathers Don’t Need An Applause

One of my favorite Chris Rock bits is “I Take Care of My Kids”. Too often men are celebrated for doing what they are supposed to do. Their parade marches down the street to the sound of praise, while women receive a pity party and walk away labeled a statistic. I am surrounded by enough hard working women who are raising their beautiful and talented children alone to know that this isn’t fair. My father didn’t expect a gold-medal for being a good father, being a good father is his gold-medal. Today, I believe we live in a society where the lack of father figures is so prevalent, that...
